Nearly 6,000 people auditioned. Eight finalists are left. 43 million travelers a year will hear the winner.
The next time you land at Logan, the voice telling you where to find your bag might belong to someone from Dorchester. Or Everett. Or the North End.
Massport’s “Voice of Logan” contest has narrowed nearly 6,000 auditions down to eight finalists, and the public now gets the final say. Voting is open at VoiceofLogan.com through Wednesday, October 28.
How it works
Any Massachusetts resident 18 or older could audition by reading a short script on video. Judges scored entries on clarity, delivery and something Massport called the “Boston vibe.” Each contestant also wrote a short pitch on why they should get the job.
Gov. Maura Healey and Massport CEO Rich Davey announced the finalists live on KISS 108. The group comes from East Boston, Dorchester, the North End and other Greater Boston communities.
What the winner gets
Their voice on Logan’s public announcements – greetings, ground transportation directions, concessions info, heard by about 43 million travelers a year. The winner will be announced November 5, and the new voice should be live in time for the holiday travel rush.
Why people care
The contest got national attention, including from Jimmy Kimmel and the Bruins. It taps into something Boston rarely gets to vote on: what the city actually sounds like to the people arriving. For a lot of newcomers and international students, that airport voice is literally the first Boston accent they hear.
Your turn
Listen to all eight at VoiceofLogan.com and vote before Wednesday night. Then tell us in the comments: should Logan sound like a classic Boston accent, or like the Boston of today?
