Boston campuses are already busy, and several events happening this week are free and open to the public.
Here are a few worth saving from Sept. 4 through Sept. 10.

1. BU Fall Arts Fair
When: Friday, Sept. 4, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: GSU Plaza, Boston University
Best for: BU students looking for arts, internships and campus opportunities
More than 25 BU arts programs, academic units and selected Boston-area arts organizations will be at the fair, including ICA/Boston and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
There are also quick custom portraits, plus a raffle for BU students.
2. Free Outdoor Tango at MIT
When: Friday, Sept. 4, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Kendall Urban Park Roof Garden
Best for: Trying something random with friends
The event is free and open to the public, with a beginner tango class starting at 6:30 p.m.
The roof garden is right by Kendall/MIT station on the Red Line.
The event runs rain or shine, with an indoor backup nearby if needed.
3. Outdoor Movie: Encanto
When: Friday, Sept. 4, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Where: Kendall/MIT Open Space
Best for: An easy Friday night plan
MIT Open Space is screening Encanto outdoors, free and open to everyone.
Bring a blanket or chair if you want to stay comfortable.
Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis, even if you register in advance.
4. Art at Countway Opening Reception
When: Tuesday, Sept. 8, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Where: Countway Library, Harvard Medical School
Best for: Art and mental health
The opening reception for Do You See Me? explores postpartum trauma and recovery through 15 large-scale paintings by physician and artist S. Abbas Shobeiri.
The reception is open to everyone, but RSVP in advance.
One thing to know: regular weekday access to the exhibition is generally for Harvard ID holders, while the Sept. 8 reception is specifically open to the public.
5. Shadows and Light at Boston College
When this week: Sept. 8–10, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College
Best for: A quiet campus break
The exhibition explores Belgian Symbolist art and includes works by artists such as Léon Spilliaert and Fernand Khnopff.
Admission to the museum is free.
The exhibition opens Sept. 8 and continues through Dec. 6, so you have more time if this week gets busy.
6. Taste of Off Campus at BC
When: Wednesday, Sept. 9, 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Where: Cadigan Alumni Center Lawn
Best for: Free food
Dozens of area restaurants and eateries will be handing out food samples, drinks, menus, coupons and other giveaways as part of BC’s fall off-campus welcome event.
The event is public and free, with food available while supplies last.
