If you are thinking about leaving Boston around Thanksgiving, it is worth checking the train before automatically booking a bus or flight.

Amtrak currently offers Night Owl fares on select Northeast Corridor trains departing between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m., including routes between Boston and New York, Newark, Philadelphia and Washington.

And some of the advertised prices are unusually low.

Boston ↔ New York: from $20
Boston ↔ Philadelphia: from $25
Boston ↔ Washington: from $30
Boston ↔ New Haven: from $15

These are one-way Coach fares on select departures, and availability varies by train and date.

Can you actually use them around Thanksgiving?

Potentially, yes.

Amtrak’s current Night Owl page does not list a Thanksgiving-specific blackout period.

But it also says discounted seats are limited, may not appear on every train or date, and remain subject to the restrictions or blackout rules attached to the fare being purchased.

So Night Owl pricing may still appear on some Thanksgiving-period departures, but a $20 Boston–New York fare should not be treated as guaranteed holiday pricing.

The catch is availability.

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel periods of the year, and lower-priced seats can disappear as trains fill.

One sale definitely does not apply

Amtrak also recently ran a separate Falling Fares promotion offering at least 25% off eligible Coach fares.

That deal covered travel through Dec. 17, but specifically excluded Nov. 20 through Nov. 30, essentially the entire Thanksgiving travel window.

The booking period also ended Sept. 30.

So if you find a very cheap late-November ticket now, it is not a Thanksgiving sale.

It is more likely a Night Owl fare or another low fare still available on that specific train.

The tickets are already on sale

You do not need to wait for November.

Thanksgiving trains can already be booked, and Amtrak recommends reserving early because fares are generally higher during holidays and lower-priced inventory is limited.

The best places to look are often the less convenient departure times: early morning and late evening trains.

The tradeoff is timing.

The cheapest option may mean leaving Boston very early or arriving at your destination late at night.

The move: search Thanksgiving trains now, compare multiple departure times and grab the low fare if it works for your schedule.

Those $20 and $25 Night Owl price points are real.

Whether they appear on the Thanksgiving train you want comes down to the specific departure, fare rules and remaining availability.
