A Boston date night can get expensive fast. But you do not need a $150 restaurant bill to make dinner feel like an actual date.
We checked current dinner menus at Boston restaurants for atmosphere, location and — most importantly — what two people can realistically spend after Massachusetts’ 6.25% meals tax and a 20% tip. Alcohol is not included.
These six restaurants can make a $50–$100 total budget work for two, although some require more deliberate ordering.
Bar Volpe — Best Italian value
South Boston
Bar Volpe feels like a proper date-night restaurant without requiring a steakhouse-sized bill. The South Boston restaurant serves Southern Italian food, including handmade pasta and a Sardinian paella designed for sharing.
The strongest budget play is the $60 Sardinian paella, which serves 2–4 people. Add the $7 olives and an $8 sorbetto or gelato, and the food subtotal is $75. After tax and a 20% tip, that is about $94.69.
That is a real dinner with dessert, but there is no room for drinks if you want to stay under $100. Bar Volpe serves dinner daily from 5–10 p.m. and takes reservations.
Budget verdict: Works with deliberate ordering.
Myers + Chang — Best built-in date-night deal
South End
Myers + Chang actually offers a “Great Date Night” menu.
The $70 Garden Party menu serves two and includes soup, vegetables, dumplings, noodles and rice. After tax and a 20% tip, the total is about $88.38.
There are also $80 seafood and meat-focused versions, but those come to about $101 after tax and tip, so they miss the strict $100 ceiling.
Dinner runs nightly, with the restaurant open until 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. Reservations are available.
Budget verdict: Comfortably works for dinner if you choose the $70 menu.
Barcelona Wine Bar — Best for a shareable dinner
South End
Barcelona Wine Bar works if you want a lively date-night setting without a big-ticket entrée.
The current South End menu lists Chicken Pimientos at $25.50. Two orders plus the $6.50 marinated olives come to $57.50 before tax and tip, or about $72.59 all-in.
That gives each person a full entrée plus something to share, with plenty of room under $100. Drinks can change the math quickly.
Barcelona is at 525 Tremont St. and takes reservations. Its current weekday happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 4–6 p.m.
Budget verdict: Comfortably works for two without alcohol.
Fox & the Knife — Best pasta date
South Boston
If the goal is pasta and a restaurant that feels more special than a typical student dinner, Fox & the Knife is a strong option.
Current pastas include tagliatelle Bolognese at $25 and luna di ricotta at $23. Add the $14 bietola and burrata, and the food subtotal is $62. After tax and a 20% tip, that comes to about $78.28.
That is enough for two substantial pasta dishes plus a shared appetizer.
Fox & the Knife is at 28 W Broadway and serves dinner daily from 4:30–10 p.m. Reservations are released on a rolling 30-day basis, and the bar also takes walk-ins with the full menu.
Budget verdict: Comfortably works for two without alcohol.
Eastern Standard — Best polished option
Fenway
Eastern Standard has the classic brasserie feel, but you do not have to order its most expensive dishes to make the budget work.
Two grilled bavette steak frites at $34 each come to $68 before tax and tip, or about $85.85 all-in. Each person gets a full entrée.
The restaurant is at 775 Beacon St. and accepts reservations. Dinner service runs until 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 8 p.m. Sunday.
Budget verdict: Comfortably works for two without alcohol.
Saltie Girl — Best seafood option
Back Bay
Saltie Girl can work for a seafood-focused date if you skip its pricier lobster and caviar options.
Two grilled whole rainbow trout at $36 each come to $72 before tax and tip, or about $90.90 all-in. Each person gets a substantial entrée with fennel and celery herb salad.
The catch: there is not much room left for extras. Drinks, an appetizer or dessert would push this example over $100.
Saltie Girl is at 279 Dartmouth St. Reservations are strongly encouraged for indoor dining, while patio seating is first-come, first-served.
Budget verdict: Works for two, but leaves little room for extras.
The bottom line
A $50–$100 date-night budget is realistic in Boston, but $100 means something different at every restaurant.
The strongest built-in value is Myers + Chang’s $70 date-night menu, while Barcelona Wine Bar, Fox & the Knife and Eastern Standard give you enough room for a genuine dinner for two. Bar Volpe works with deliberate ordering, while Saltie Girl is the tightest fit.
The simplest rule: look at the menu before you sit down, decide what you’re ordering, and remember that a $70 food bill is already about $88 after tax and a 20% tip.
Prices and restaurant information checked Oct. 5, 2026. Menu prices and restaurant policies can change. Budget examples exclude alcohol and assume a 20% tip. Massachusetts’ current meals tax is 6.25%.
