At Northeastern, college life does not always mean spending every semester in a classroom.
For many students, part of the experience means leaving campus for months at a time to work full time.
Co-op is optional in most Northeastern programs, but it remains one of the university’s signature parts of student life.
How co-op works
Most Northeastern co-ops last around six months, although approved positions can run from four to eight months.
Undergraduates on a standard four-year plan can complete up to two co-ops.
Students can become eligible for their first co-op after completing at least three academic terms and the required pre-co-op preparation.
Typical full-time co-op work is around 32 to 40 hours per week.
It is a real job search
Students prepare through a co-op course or equivalent preparation, build their résumé and apply for positions through platforms including NUworks.
Northeastern currently lists more than 3,800 employers hiring students through NUworks.
Employers still decide who gets interviewed and hired, so students compete for positions much like they would in a regular job search.
A co-op placement is not automatically guaranteed.
Most co-ops are paid
Northeastern says co-op pay averages more than $20 an hour, although compensation varies significantly by industry and some positions offer lower pay or stipends.
Students who are only on co-op do not pay tuition for the co-op period.
If they take a credit-bearing class at the same time, tuition is charged for that coursework.
Housing and other living costs still apply.
Why it changes campus culture
Co-op means students can spend one part of the year studying on Huntington Avenue and the next working at a hospital, startup, engineering firm or organization somewhere else entirely.
That rhythm brings career planning into college life early.
At Northeastern, work experience is less of a summer side project and more of a regular part of how students move through college.
