Before deciding how to cover another semester, check what Massachusetts financial aid you may qualify for.

For eligible students attending Massachusetts public community colleges, programs including MassEducate can cover tuition and fees after other applicable grant aid is taken into account.

Depending on eligibility, some students may also qualify for up to $1,200 for books and supplies, plus potentially another allowance of up to $1,200 for other college costs.

There are requirements. Students generally need to meet Massachusetts residency rules, enroll in an eligible program and complete the FAFSA or MASFA, depending on their situation.

At Massachusetts public four-year colleges and universities, MASSGrant Plus can also help qualifying students with tuition and fees.

The state uses a family of four earning roughly $85,000 or less as an example of a household that may qualify for full tuition-and-fee coverage, plus up to $1,200 for books and supplies.

That $85,000 figure is an example, not a universal cutoff. Actual eligibility depends on factors including household finances, enrollment, other financial aid and program requirements.

For families in the state’s roughly $85,000–$100,000 example range, an eligible full-time student may have tuition-and-fee out-of-pocket costs reduced by up to half.

One important catch: MASSGrant Plus does not cover room and board.

And timing matters.

The Massachusetts priority financial-aid deadline for the 2026–27 academic year was June 30, 2026. FAFSA and MASFA applications remain open, but available aid and deadlines can vary by program and school. If you haven’t applied yet, contact your college’s financial-aid office to find out what options may still be available.

Financial aid is boring until you realize boring paperwork could save you thousands.

Then suddenly it’s very interesting.

Massachusetts financial-aid program information was checked on August 17, 2026 using current state guidance. Award amounts and eligibility depend on individual circumstances and can change. Students should confirm their eligibility, deadlines and potential award directly with their college financial-aid office or the Massachusetts Office of Student Financial Assistance.
