- Allston
Best fit for BU students who want to stay close to campus. It sits just west of BU along Commonwealth Avenue and is one of Boston’s biggest student areas, with easy Green Line access.
- Brighton
A little farther west than Allston and more residential. It works especially well for BU and BC students who want a quieter neighborhood while staying connected through the Green Line.
- Fenway
One of the easiest options for Northeastern students because much of the neighborhood sits within walking distance of campus. It is also close to Kenmore, the Back Bay side of Boston and the Green Line.
- Mission Hill
Just south of Northeastern and close to the Longwood Medical Area, Mission Hill is popular with student roommate groups and connects toward campus through the Green Line E branch and buses.
- Back Bay
Best for students who want to stay very central. It sits between downtown, Fenway and the South End, making it especially convenient for Emerson students, although rents usually sit on the higher end.
- South End
Just south of Back Bay and close to both Emerson and Northeastern, the South End gives students a more residential feel while keeping downtown within easy reach. Emerson lists it among the neighborhoods commonly chosen by off campus students.
- Chestnut Hill
Best suited to BC students who want to stay close to campus. BC’s main campus sits in Chestnut Hill, west of central Boston, with access through the Green Line and university shuttles.
- Newton
Located just west of BC’s main campus, Newton can work well for BC students who value proximity and a more residential environment. BC’s Newton Campus sits about one mile west of Chestnut Hill.

For BU, start with Allston or Brighton. For Northeastern, look at Fenway or Mission Hill. For BC, Brighton, Chestnut Hill and Newton make the most sense. For Emerson, Back Bay and the South End offer the easiest access.
The exact street can matter as much as the neighborhood, so always check the real commute from the apartment to campus before signing.
