Here’s how to string together the August Moon Festival, Open Newbury Street, and the last performances of Free Shakespeare on the Common without burning out or overheating — because yes, it’s also a heat advisory weekend, so plan around the shade.
Saturday, August 8
With a heat advisory running through Saturday, treat the morning as your outdoor window. Head to Boston Common early if you want to scope out the Parkman Bandstand before Sunday’s finale, or use the day to hit an air-conditioned spot like the Boston Public Library, where the new LEXICON installation is on view through November. Save higher-energy plans for after the sun drops.
Sunday, August 9: The Big Day
Sunday is when everything lands at once.
The 55th Chinatown August Moon Festival runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. along Harrison Avenue and Beach, Tyler, Hudson, and Oxford Streets. It’s free to attend and outdoors, with lion dancing, traditional folk dance, martial arts demonstrations, calligraphy, and vendors selling Chinese food, crafts, and goods, built around the idea of a successful harvest — one of the city’s longest-running Chinese cultural festivals. Food, crafts, and merchandise from vendors cost extra even though admission itself is free.
Open Newbury Street also falls on August 9, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Newbury closes to car traffic between Berkeley Street and Massachusetts Avenue, turning that stretch into a pedestrian shopping and browsing zone — a good midday stop between Chinatown and the Common.
And Free Shakespeare on the Common wraps its 30th season this weekend with A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Sunday, August 9 is the very last day, with a matinee at 1:30 p.m. and a final evening performance at 8 p.m. at the Parkman Bandstand. Admission is free, though optional chair rentals may be available for a fee. Since it’s the finale, it’s reasonable to expect heavier crowds than a typical performance — getting there well before curtain is a sensible precaution if you want good lawn real estate.
How to String It Together
Chinatown in the morning, Newbury Street for the midday lull, Boston Common for Shakespeare in the evening — it’s a walkable route (see our Sunday date-idea guide for one version of the path), and all three events sit within roughly a mile of each other. Bring water and sun protection; conditions can still be hot and humid even after the advisory technically lifts Saturday.
